Aim Awards Newburgh Green Project of the Year

by Aim Admin | Oct 16, 2020 | Awards, Members, Press Release

INDIANAPOLIS – Accelerate Indiana Municipalities (Aim) announced Newburgh the 2020 Green Project of the Year winner. Newburgh received this honor earlier this month during Aim Annual Awards Program, presented by Baker Tilly Municipal Advisors, LLC, during the virtual 2020 Aim Ideas Summit.

Newburgh took home Green Project of the Year for its program to convert all trash receptacles to either full recycling containers or dual recycling and trash receptacles.  The program was proposed by a local high school student and fully embraced by town leaders.  Through multiple grants and a commitment to sustainable practices, the town met its goal of 100% recycling capacity.  For more on this project, watch this brief video.

“One of the best things to watch among local government leaders is how quickly they are able to affect change in their communities.” Aim CEO Matt Greller said. “The Newburgh project exemplifies this by showcasing how a young citizen can propose a change to the community’s sustainable practices and the town can, in a relatively quick manner, show their willingness and commitment listen and respond.  I am very impressed by this project and believe it will be a best practice example for other communities around the state.”

Aim launched the Green Communities Initiative in 2008 in conjunction with Christopher B. Burke Engineering, LLC, to identify potential cost savings to communities facing budget shortfalls, promote economically competitive quality-of-life concepts, and ultimately serve as role models for citizens while better protecting our environment. The initiative has expanded educational opportunities for municipalities. Every year the program honors one outstanding project, which exemplifies the program’s ideals.
