FRENCH LICK, IN.– Munster Clerk-Treasurer David Shafer received the 2016 IACT Financial Management Award from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT). Shafer was honored during the IACT Presidents’ Reception earlier this week at the IACT Annual Conference & Exhibition in French Lick.

A lifelong Northwest Indiana resident, Shafer’s resume includes 25 years at United States Steel, Gary Works, two terms on the Munster Town Council, 22 years on the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission, Past President of the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers and Past President of the National Association of Regional Councils.

“I was thrilled to see the Financial Management Award go to David Shafer. He has served his community and IACT through service on our Board of Directors, Legislative Committee and many other roles. He’s highly respected among his peers and I’m happy to see him recognized so prominently,” said Matt Greller, IACT Executive Director and CEO.

Fellow Clerk-Treasurers, Michael Griffin, Highland; Pat Hawrot, Dyer; and Janice Malinowski, Schererville, nominated Shafer for the award citing his integrity, civic service, and willingness to help other clerk-treasurers through mentorship, advice, and financial leadership.

The Financial Management Award is given to a finance officer or administrator who has made outstanding achievements in fiscal management, financial recording and leadership in public service.

In its 40th year, the IACT Annual Awards program, presented by Umbaugh, recognizes communities and individuals in municipal government for excellence and outstanding achievement. A nine-member panel of qualified judges selected this year’s winners from a competitive field of nominees from around the state.

The Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) is a coalition of municipal officials who seek to improve the quality of life in Indiana through effective government, and is a member of the National League of Cities. Founded in 1891, IACT is one of the oldest state municipal organizations in the country, with 470 cities and towns as members. IACT advocates for municipalities as the official voice of municipal government in Indiana, and promotes good government through education, training and leadership.
